In 1902, a National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers was approved for the Hot Springs area and construction was completed in 1907. The home was originally named the Battle Mountain Sanitarium after a nearby mountain peak. The cemetery was established for the interment of veterans who died while residing at the home. An earthquake with an abrupt onset and a shortduration (3-5 seconds) was felt by all at Wind CaveNational Park. The March 24, 1964, tremor causedsmall rocks to fall in the cave. Buildings creaked,and a slight trembling motion was noticed at HotSprings (V). Three days later (March 27), anothershock was reported from the same area. The epicenterwas apparently located near Van Tassell, Wyoming,although no instrumental records were available forthis event owing to the proximity in time of itsoccurrence to the occurrence of the great Alaska earthquake.
