U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service-D.C. Booth National Historic Fish Hatchery
By the 1940s, the water supply at Spearfish had become increasingly undependable. This resulted in the acquisition of land 12 miles west of Spearfish from Judge McNenny and the State of South Dakota to rear fish. In 1949, a new hatchery was constructed and named the McNenny National Fish Hatchery. Between the McNenny and Spearfish National Fish Hatcheries, nearly one million fish were produced annually. ATSDR - PHA - ANNIE CREEK MINE TAILINGS (RELIANCE TAILINGS), LEADE, LAWRENCE COUNTY, SOUTH DAKOTA
The City of Spearfish currently obtains its water supply from a 600 foot well located in theMadison Formation. In the past, municipal water was obtained from Spearfish Creek. Therefore, contaminated surfacewater from Annie and Spearfish Creek did not reach the Spearfish municipal intake. A letterfrom the City of Spearfish stated that no water from Annie Creek reached the Spearfish'smunicipal water intake. ... [Read More]

Hydrology, Hazards, and Geomorphic Development of Gypsum Karst in the Northern Black Hills, South Dakota and Wyoming
Dissolution of gypsum and anhydrite in the Minnelusa and Spearfish Formations in the northern Black Hills has led to subsidence and collapse resulting in the development of disrupted bedding, breccia pipes and pinnacles in the Minnelusa, and sinkholes and breccia pipes extending up into the Spearfish and higher formations. Many of these sinkholes in the Spearfish are sites of resurgent springs where the potentiometric surface is above the land surface. Dry steep-walled sinkholes are located where the potentiometric surface lies below the bottom of the sinkhole. The largest sinkholes are the result of dissolution of the thick anhydrite in the subsurface Minnelusa and consequent stoping to the surface. As the dissolution front of the Minnelusa anhydrite moves radially outward from the center of the Black Hills, and as the potentiometric surface falls to lower stratigraphic levels while the land surface is lowered by erosion, the present springs will dry up and new ones will develop down ...
