Each year these corn decorations are completely stripped down and entirely new murals are created. The Corn Palace is a great tourist attraction and a meeting place for the community. A tourism official in South Dakota estimated ski activity down 45 percent and snowmobiling down 70 percent this year compared with a year ago. However, traffic at Mount Rushmore, considered a "fair weather" attraction, set monthly attendance records from October through January. A ski resort in Montana reported good snow conditions this year and an increase in visits over last year. ... [Read More]
Theodore Roosevelt National Park The third unit is the Elkhorn Ranch approximately 35 miles north of the South Unit. The only access to the ranch is through a gravel road. This area receives very little visitation. The Park entrance fee – good for seven days and at both Units – is $10 per vehicle or $5.00 per person. Fees are collected at the entrance station at the North Unit Visitor Center and the Medora Visitor Center in the South Unit. The Theodore Roosevelt National Park is mainly a "pass-through" Park. For example, many visitors on their way to Yellowstone or Glacier National Parks (or other areas) stop off at the Park to enjoy the scenery. The sudden change of topography along westbound I-94 also draws visitors into the Park. Last year, an average of 450,000 visitors visited one of the two units. Over the last few years, visitation has been relatively stable. The Park estimated that approximately 60 percent of the total visitation last year visited the South Unit, while the rest visited the North Unit ... [Read More]

Geology of Jewel Cave National Monument The exploration of Jewel Cave began about 1900 when two South Dakota prospectors, Frank and Albert Michaud, and a friend, Charles Bush, happened to hear wind rushing through a hole in the rocks in Hell Canyon. Enlarging the hole, they found a cave full of sparkling crystals. They filed a mining claim on the "Jewel Lode," but they found no valuable minerals, so they tried turning the cave into a tourist attraction instead. The business was never a success, but the cave did attract attention, and in 1908 Jewel Cave National Monument was established to protect the small but extraordinary beautiful cave. Fifty years later exploration of the cave suddenly intensified. Led by the husband-and-wife team of Herb and Jan Conn, modern-day cavers have discovered new wonders and more than 80 miles of passages. Today the cave is among the world's longest and is renowned for its variety of formations. ... [Read More]
