However, nowadays, in the mood of patriotism brought on by 9/11 and Iraq, the Black Hills have taken on a center stage position as we look back to our roots. On the side of a granite mountain south of Rapid City is the famed rock sculptures of the faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Teddy Roosevelt - the Mount Rushmore Memorial - a National Monument. The writer (NMS) feels a personal kinship to this wondrous accomplishment by Gutzon Borglum and his son, Lincoln. I rented a room in 1950 from a Mrs Vincent. One Sunday she asked me to join some guests for breakfast. I was introduced to Lincoln Borglum and his family. Seems the bed I used was also used by Gutzon whenever he was in town as a respite from the construction site. NIH Record-9-22-98--NIDR's Shalizi Completes Cross-USA Bike Trip
As the ride drew to a close, Shalizi was frustrated to be so close to home and a warm bed, yet so far. "Our last camp was in Frederick. The night before that we were in Rocky Gap, near Cumberland. If I had a car, I could have driven home, slept in a real bed, then come back in time to start the day's ride. I got real impatient once we were in the same area code." ...

Shalizi also said that what he misses most about riding 80 miles a day "is the freedom to pig out without fear of gaining weight. It's surprising how palatable and inexpensive the food is in America's heartland. Wisconsin had the best food. I really like cheese, and the Chamber of Commerce in La Crosse threw a dairy product feast for us." Top meals of the tour were at a diner in La Crosse and at a bed-and-breakfast in Confluence, Pa., a town whose population was nearly doubled by the arrival of the group. ... [Read More]

CSREES - USDA - Success Stories - Food Choices
In Virginia , one youth group enrolled in "Changing The Course" (a nutrition-based cancer prevention program for youth) made a lot of changes in their eating habits. At the time of their enrollment only four girls out of sixteen were eating breakfast, four were eating one meal a day and that was in the evening. After completing five ninety-minute programs, the youth made changes to eat healthier. Ninety percent were eating something like fruit, cereal or muffins for breakfast and the four that were eating only one meal had incorporated into their day fruit for breakfast and small healthy snacks during the day. Here are some of the comments they made during their EFNEP graduation celebration: "I am eating breakfast for the first time in three years." "I enjoyed this program and I am trying to eat more fruits and vegetables." "This class was informative and the snacks were awesome." "I ask my mom to get more nutritious snacks at the grocery ...
