South Dakota Division History History of the Federal Highway Administration's South Dakota Division The Federal Highway Administration's origin dates back to 1893. The agencywas originally called the Office of Road Inquiry, then the Office of PublicRoad Inquiry, the Office of Public Roads and Rural Engineering, the Bureauof Public Roads, the Public Roads Administration, and finally in 1967,the Federal Highway Administration. The South Dakota branch or divisionwas established in 1932. Business was conducted at the local convertedtrain depot in Pierre, South Dakota until an official Federal Buildingwas constructed in 1965.
