Huron WMD Junior Duck Stamp Program in South Dakota
South Dakota began participating in the JuniorDuck Stamp Program in 1993. Each year, over 800 participants fromover 45 different schools across the state enter their artworkinto the contest. The art contest is administered at the HuronWetland Management District in Huron, South Dakota. Here, theentries are judged by age class. First, Second, and Third Placesare awarded in each class as well as Honorable Mentions. First,Second, and Third Place prizes are sent to the winningindividuals, while their entries become part of a display thatwill travel the state throughout the year. First place winnersfrom each age class are judged to determine the Best of Show forSouth Dakota. This entry goes on to the national level to competeagainst other states' Best of Show winners. Earthquake Hazards Program: Earthquake History of South Dakota
Buildings were jarred, dishes rattled, and looseobjects swayed (V) at Sioux Falls from an October 11,1938, tremor. Police stations received more than50 calls from alarmed residents. The total felt areaaffected was about 7,500 square kilometers in South Dakota andone town in Minnesota. A strong, localized shockon July 23, 1946, caused several cracks in watermains (VI) at Wessington. The earthquake, whichoccurred about 12:45 a.m., also awakened sleepersat Huron. The small felt area extended from Pierreto De Smet and from Wessington to Redfield. Asimilar disturbance occurred on December 31, 1961,causing slight damage at Pierre. Reports of crackedplaster and a cracked cement floor were received.Also, buildings shook and loose objects rattled.Newspaper and police switchboards were swampedwith calls from alarmed residents (VI).
