The Civil War at a Glance
Confederate strategy in the early months is mainly defensive in the face of Federal efforts to retain control of the slave-holding Border States of Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri; to tighten a blockade of the Southern coastline; and to regain control of the Mississippi River from Cairo, Illinois, to the Gulf of Mexico. In Missouri, in a lightning-like campaign, Brig. Gen. Nathaniel Lyon crowds the Missouri State Guard into the southwestern part of the State before being killed and his army defeated at Wilson's Creek in August. The Missouri State Guard moves on to besiege and capture Lexington, but retires into southwest Missouri when threatened by Federal columns converging from the east and west. A union army is defeated at Belmont, Missouri, early in November--the first test of battle for a rising young brigadier general named Ulysses S. Grant. Along the Southern coasts, Federals cling to several forts and employ their power afloat to seize and establish additional fortif ... [Read More]

Basketball / Baseball 60-second spot ...

Advertising to parents encouraged them to support their children’s participation in physical activity. Images included a carpool van covered in bumper stickers promoting activities (ex: Play is a four-letter VERB) and an enthusiastic mom cheering on her child at a basketball game. ...

The first phase of the Youth Media Campaign launched the VERB brand, introducing the audience to the brand name, VERB, and what it represents. Advertising showcased a variety of VERBs and highlighted an assortment of activities. Commercials showed tweens doing many different VERBs like run, kick, dance, etc. Other ads highlighted a single VERB, like swing; the commercial showed different ways to swing, including to swing dance, swing a baseball bat or swing on a swing set. ... Market Hall and Sheds
The South Carolina Society Hall is considered one of Charleston's most valuable Adamesque buildings. Built in 1804, the Hall was designed by Charlestonian Gabriel Manigault, a gentleman architect who introduced the Adamesque style to the city after studying in Europe. Manigault's design for the Society's headquarters, of which he was a member, consisted of a two-story brick building on a very high basement, covered with stucco. The first floor contained three rooms used for billiards, a small school the society operated, and quarters for the schoolmaster. A large meeting room and ballroom occupied the second floor. The meeting room also contained a small musician's gallery and a decorative Palladian window, while the ballroom was ornamented with a Neoclassical canopy. In 1825, the portico with Doric and Ionic orders, designed by prominent local architect Frederick Wesner, was added along with the brownstone stairs and iron railings. As a result of damage to the building during the Civi ... [Read More]

Avian Collision and Electrocution: An Annotated Bibliography
The authors advise managers to discourage construction of power lines at eagle wintering sites, especially near communal roosts. New power lines should be constructed without electrocution hazards, and some existing power line poles should be modified to eliminate hazards. Power lines can be a significant cause of mortality for eagles, especially in broad, flat valleys where natural perches are not available. (Artificial perches designed for eagles have been only partially successful.) Electrocution accidents are most likely to occur on poles that provide a good view of the surrounding terrain and on crossarms that are crosswise to prevailing winds. Raptor electrocutions occur primarily during winter when eagles concentrate near human developments. ... [Read More]
