District tourist activity strengthened further in recent weeks. Along the coast, hoteliers at Virginia Beach, the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and Myrtle Beach, S.C., reported that their bookings over the Fourth of July holiday were somewhat stronger than a year ago. A contact on the Outer Banks told us that construction of a large number of rental homes in the area had resulted in substantial rent discounting. A respondent in Virginia Beach reported that bookings for September and October were below the year ago level. ... [Read More]

Tourist activity strengthened somewhat in March and early April. Contacts at mountain resorts in Virginia and West Virginia told us cold weather and substantial snowfall helped make this year's ski season the best in recent memory. Coastal tourism, however, was mixed. A respondent from the Outer Banks of North Carolina said that hotel bookings were higher, in part because of events celebrating the centennial of the Wright Brothers first flight. But contacts in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Virginia Beach, Virginia, told us that wet weather had caused some trip cancellations. Despite cold weather and concerns about the war, attendance at the National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C., nearly matched last year's approximately 1 million people. ... [Read More]

Tourism was flat since our last report. A contact on the Outer Banks of North Carolina reported a brisk business in beach property rentals in July. Hoteliers in both Virginia Beach and Myrtle Beach, however, said they had to discount prices early in the week of July 4 in order to increase bookings. In addition, a tornado struck a resort area in Myrtle Beach on July 6 and damaged several hotels and put a dent in that area's tourist business. Tourism in Baltimore, Md., also received a setback from a bit of bad luck in July -- a fire in a railroad tunnel caused the postponement of three Baltimore Orioles games at Camden Yards and the cancellation of bookings at nearby hotels. ... Tourist activity was mixed since our last report. Hoteliers at Virginia Beach, Va., and Myrtle Beach, S.C., told us that bookings for the Labor Day weekend were somewhat higher than a year ago. However, a contact on the Outer Banks of North Carolina reported that business was a little softer than during Labor Day weekend last year. She attributed weaker bookings to an inundation of mosquitoes and jellyfish in the area. She also noted that tourists were not dining out as much, reducing revenues at area restaurants. Looking ahead, a respondent in Myrtle Beach expected tourist activity to be somewhat weaker in coming months, in part because of fewer flights into the area as financially strapped airlines trimmed costs. ...
