South Carolina Vacation Rental

FRB: Beige Book--Richmond--July 28, 2004
Tourist activity was mixed since our last report. Hoteliers at Virginia Beach, Va., and Myrtle Beach, S.C., reported stronger bookings for the Fourth of July holiday weekend compared to a year ago. Furthermore, they noted that because the holiday fell on a Sunday, bookings rose substantially during the weeks before and after the holiday as vacationers stretched out the weekend. In addition, a manager at a mountain resort said that time-share sales were doing extremely well with many buyers paying in full at closing. In contrast, a contact on the Outer Banks of North Carolina indicated somewhat weaker bookings compared to a year ago, which she attributed in part to bargain-hunting vacationers waiting until the last minute to book rooms. ... FRB: Beige Book - Richmond
Commercial realtors across the District noted somewhat weaker leasing and construction activity in recent months. Leasing activity was generally slower in the retail and office sectors. Large blocks of office space went back onto the market in northern Virginia and the District of Columbia because of weaker demand by high-tech firms. Class A office space remained generally tight in major metropolitan areas, although there were pockets of easing. A number of contacts reported lower office and retail rental rates. Commercial construction activity remained steady with very few speculative projects on line. ... [Read More]

Virgin Islands NP Home Page
Land Acquisition/Park In-Holdings. As society continues to seek solitude, inspiration from nature and temporary escape from daily stress, the Caribbean islands come under intense pressure to develop more land for vacation rental properties and permanent residential housing. Because St. John is no exception - and because islands have very limited potential for growth and development- Virgin Islands National Park is, possibly more than its sister parks, threatened by rapid development. Already, undeveloped land that has been privately held within the Park since its beginning, is quickly being developed into luxury vacation home subdivisions. Park management estimates that, at this rapid pace and coupled with the skyrocketing value of real estate on St. John, in-holdings that the Park is unable to purchase in the next five years will be lost to Virgin Islands National Park forever. ... FTC: "Operation Trip-Up"
Travel-related scams are taking off again, according to the Federal Trade Commission and 12 state Attorneys General, who today announced "Operation Trip-Up," a joint federal-state- local campaign targeting a wide range of vacation frauds. Officials said 36 law-enforcement actions have been filed as part of the campaign, which also includes an extensive consumer education program. The cases were filed against everything from run-of-the-mill vacation certificate telemarketers and timeshare resellers, to emerging variations of travel fraud involving flights pitched to immigrants, and a new type of scam called a travel agent "credential mill." ... As the Tucker's family home, the mansion was the scene of a constant round of formal teas, receptions and parties for many years. When necessary, it was also used for family funerals, with the deceased lying in state in one of the richly appointed rooms while the funeral service was performed. One night in the 1930s, as the family slept in the upstairs bedrooms, fire broke out on the first floor. The people escaped without injury, but damage was severe in some downstairs rooms. The damage was repaired, however, and life went on. The Tucker children grew up and moved away. Garland S. Tucker, Sr. died in 1949. Mrs. Tucker continued to reside there until her death in 1972, when the house passed into the hands of their only son, Garland S. Tucker, Jr. At that time, many homes surrounding the Tucker House were falling to demolition, as the state government pursued pressing needs for expansion. In 1975, Tucker donated the house to the city of Raleigh. The city responded by moving the house o ... [Read More]
