Many of you may know him as Mary Boykin Chesnut’s husband. Born in Camden, SC, he served numerous terms in the SC house and senate and was elected to US Senate in 1858. He was an aide to General Beauregard at Fort Sumter, a member of the Provisional Confederate Congress, and eventually served on the staff of Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Appointed to brigadie r general in 1864, his place in SC military history is well noted. ... Lt. J. Fuller Lyon enlisted in the 7th SCV Infantry and fought at First Manassas/Bull Run. Discharged in 1862 with typhoid fever, he recovered and joined Co. H 19th SCV Infantry. In 1864 he was wounded in the left arm while wearing this coat. He died in Abbeville in 1920.
