DWARF-FLOWERED HEARTLEAF, Hexastylis naniflora, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service
BIOLOGICAL INFORMATION: Thrips (sucking insects) and flies are the major pollinators of most plant species in the genus Hexastylis . As yet, the pollination method for dwarf-flowered heartleaf is unproven, but biologists speculate that it may use the same method as its related species. With most Hexastylis species, the vectors, flies and thrips, spend most of their lives in the plant's flower tissues and feed on pollen grains or on portions of the plant's outer skin. Once the flowers have been fertilized, their seeds are distributed by ants. These ants eat the seeds' coatings and leave the seeds near the plant site or by the ant nest. Seed germination takes place in the spring after the seeds have been exposed to cool temperatures. Germination in the Dwarf-flowered heartleaf generally occurs in clusters. Some Hexastylis flowering plants, probably including the heartleaf, do not reach flowering age for 7 to 1O years. The plant's flowering period is mid-March to early June; fruit ... [Read More]

Richtex Brick Trains Inmates
A special graduation ceremony was held June 30 for the inmates at the Richtex Brick plant site in Columbia.  Mr. Bruce Beuchler, President of Richtex, attended the ceremony and congratulated the young men for successfully completing the training.  Mr. Sam Nagel, Manager of the Masonry Division and NCCR-Master Trainer, explained to the program participants that the skill of masonry has been in existence for 2000 years and that brick masons erected the Great Wall of China.  As  the graduates were presented with their certificates he explained that they now had a job skill and encouraged them to continue to develop that skill.  With an extreme shortage of brick masons, 50,000 in the southeast alone, job opportunities would be available to them if they chose to pursue them.  As a result of the training received at Richtex, three inmates have already received job offers.  ... South Carolina
Settled by the English in 1670, South Carolina was based on a plantation culture with an aristocratic, wealthy society that was dependent on black slave labor. One of the original 13 colonies, South Carolina was first formed in 1729 when the Carolina colony was divided in two to form North and South Carolina. The attack on Fort Sumter in the Charleston harbor launched the Civil War. After the war, the structure of the state changed. Today, South Carolina is a growing research center and banking state. It is fitting that the state tree of the "Palmetto State" is the cabbage palmetto, which also appears on the state flag. The flower is the yellow jessamine, and the capital is Columbia. ... State Tree and Flower
Maine designated the white pine cone and tassel as its state flower. Botanically, these are not considered flowers since gymnosperms do not have true flowers. The reproductive structures of pines are known as strobili. You could accurately state the Maine is the only state to have an official state strobilae. If you thought Oklahoma was the right answer, you are nearly correct. Mistletoe is a plant and is not a flower. It is, however, a flowering plant and bears true flowers, even though they are not showy. ... [Read More]
