State Police headquarters opened on April 14, 1925 in the Marine Corps Armory on Benefit Street in Providence. Although the Superintendent was authorized to have an office in the State House, his military experience probably led him to establish a field headquarters elsewhere. During the next several weeks Colonel Chaffee visited other State Police departments. He inquired extensively concerning the kind of mobile and personal equipment which would best suit the purposes of the new force. A special effort was made to use equipment manufactured in this state. The original badges, collar ornaments and other such items were produced by native jewelry makers. Motorcycles would be an important factor in the mobility of the new troopers.
