The morning I left camp was bright and clear, and I hoped to have afair wind; it was calm all day and we had to use the oars. Just beforedusk we reached the bar, and found it breaking heavily. Just then camea light land breeze which carried us away from danger. All night we driftedaround, and in the morning found ourselves almost back to Pt. Reyes. Iconcluded to give up my trip and return to camp; but even here the fateswere against me. A strong North wind came, we could not pull against it,and I had no recourse but to run before it. Before reaching the bar, thewind died out, and a fog settled down for an hour or two. All this time--some36 hours-- we had been without food or water, the men having neglectedto provide any as I had directed. Finding we could not pull in againstthe strong current I landed on the sand beach outside of Pt. Bonita toget some water. Three concurrent sessions were held during the afternoon to address major issues in science and technology policy. Session A examined policy implications of converging new technologies, especially nanotechnology, biotechnology, information technology, and cognitive technology. The speakers discussed the status of new technologies, their promise and uncertainties and prospects for intersections among them, and social and ethical implications. Session B addressed policy and civic implications of information technologies. Topics included the merits, risks, and vulnerabilities of new voting technologies; digital-divide issues; IT and privacy concerns; control of the Internet; and using the Web to build a more informed and engaged citizenry. All these services are decided bythe funding sources, with me it was Workers' Comp insurance. But it's not fairthat the funding sources decide what services you will get, what doctors yousee, what therapy you will get, how much they will pay for. You are workingreally hard at it in therapy. You are doing great. All of asudden funding stops. They are not paying for it any more. What do youdo? You go home and you are devastated. And then you have to sit around andwait for that whole bureaucratic process to get up again so you can actuallyfight to get more services. So the whole problem is that there are abc's out there to help, state, government, even someprivate ones. There's money there to pay for services. For one, that'sbasically for traumatic brain injury because there really isn't any and thereneeds to be. But it's not being delivered properly.
