Many parade route residents, as well as Bristolians not on the route, host backyard picnics. Bristol's Independence Day is a homecoming time when widely scattered sons and daughters return with their children, flying in from Texas or California to take part in traditional events. Independence Day parties also bring friends, friends of friends, and in some cases mystery guests. One family hosting a big annual bash entertained an unknown couple for seven years without asking their identities. "It would have been so rude to ask [who they were] after all these years," the hostess told the Bristol Phoenix . Some of Bristol's parade parties date back several generations. One was hosted first by Charles and Mary Benson, then by their daughter, Ruth Connery, and her husband, John.
