In the Schools: Rhode Island
MaryAnn Cauchon, teacher from Lillian Feinstein Elementary School on Sackett Street in Providence, wrote: “The students really enjoyed this trip. They learned a lot about nutrition, senses, and restaurant dining. They also learned a lot about careers in the food service industry. I thought this program was an excellent educational experience. It also had very positive benefits on the students' self esteem.” ...

This year another partner joined the collaboration, the Alan Shawn Feinstein Foundation, to help fund this three-day program in Rhode Island on October 4, 5, and 6 in 21 schools. Approximately 25 students in each school and their classroom teacher teamed up with one of RI's top chefs to plan and prepare for three days of fun, healthy food adventures which included a classroom visit from the chef to explore the elements of taste, a visit to a farm or food origin site, and a visit to the chef's restaurant to prepare and share a meal. ... The Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor is a special type of national park. It is a region of nearly 400,000 acres located within Worcester County in central Massachusetts and Providence County in northern Rhode Island. The National Corridor was designated by an Act of Congress on November 10, 1986 to preserve and interpret for present and future generations the unique and significant value of the Blackstone Valley. It includes cities, towns, villages and almost one million people. The Federal government does not own or manage any of the land or resources in the corridor as it does in the more traditional national parks. Instead the National Park Service, two state governments, dozens of local municipalities, businesses, nonprofit historical and environmental organizations, educational institutions, many private citizens, and a unifying commission all work together in partnerships to protect the Valley's special identity and prepare for its future. ... Health Department Lauds Study Showing
"These are not new findings. As a business issue, smoke free restaurants is positive--not problematic." said Sara Conklin, a teenage, smoke-free restaurant advocate from Barrington, Rhode Island. "But it's primarily a health issue. People in our state want to breathe clean air." ...

Stanton A. Glantz, Ph.D., and Annemarie Charlesworth, M.A., of the University of California, San Francisco, examined tourism rates in three states and six cities with laws requiring restaurants to be 100 percent smoke-free. The authors concluded: "This study debunks the tobacco industry allegation that smoke-free restaurant laws adversely affect tourism, including international tourism…Indeed, these ordinances may even be beneficial for business." ...
