Rhode Island children ages 5 to 14 are eligible to submit a poster that depicts the theme “I’m Going to College Because I Have Big Dreams.” Top winners will be selected from three age groups ranging from, 5-7, 8-11 and 12-14 years old. The winning posters will be incorporated as an ad in a CollegeBoundfund advertising campaign in the Rhode Island Newspaper Group (RING) this year. All entries must be postmarked by Friday, July 29, 2005. A panel of judges will announce winners during a reception for participating children and their families in the fall. Every effort was made to enlist qualified applicants. The general Assembly had authorized an original complement of twenty-three. A selection board composed of five former army officers was organized. Instructions for applying were carried in the major newspapers of the state. Applicants were instructed to report by the counties in which they lived, beginning on April 20. The men were warned that the mental and physical examinations would be stringent. Again military influence was observed when it was made clear that the physical examination would be the same as that given to officers of the United States Army. Each aspiring trooper was required to present certificates from three citizens as to his fitness and qualifications for State Police responsibilities.
