RIHP&HC: Old State House Demands on the Old State House were temporarily relieved when the County, Superior, and Supreme Courts moved to the new Providence County Courthouse, built 1875-1877 (later replaced by the current courthouse at 250 Benefit Street, constructed 1924-1933). Between 1877 and 1883, the Old State House was refurbished under the supervision of Providence architects Stone & Carpenter (the firm of Stone, Carpenter & Willson from 1881). The second-floor hall was eliminated and the coved ceiling, which had been hidden by a dropped ceiling, was restored in the Senate Chamber. The tiny room next to the Secretary of State's Office, originally the stair hall, was made into the Governor's Office, a telling indication of the Governor's lack of authority at that time. The Secretary of State's Office, the eighteenth-century Council Chamber, was restored in 1883, at which time the present fireplace was built. However, many state offices still rented space in other buildings. ... [Read More]

JULY 26, 2004 - OSAAR, NORTH KINGSTOWN All these services are decided bythe funding sources, with me it was Workers' Comp insurance. But it's not fairthat the funding sources decide what services you will get, what doctors yousee, what therapy you will get, how much they will pay for. You are workingreally hard at it in therapy. You are doing great. All of asudden funding stops. They are not paying for it any more. What do youdo? You go home and you are devastated. And then you have to sit around andwait for that whole bureaucratic process to get up again so you can actuallyfight to get more services. So the whole problem is that there are abc's out there to help, state, government, even someprivate ones. There's money there to pay for services. For one, that'sbasically for traumatic brain injury because there really isn't any and thereneeds to be. But it's not being delivered properly. Who knows what's out there.Nobody advertises to anybody, to the public at all. You have to work reallyhard to call this agency. They re ... [Read More]

Riverways Programs News Notes All too frequently, individuals and groups involved with natural resource conservation fail to celebrate their hard-won successes. Too often, important victories are allowed to be overshadowed by the next issue or threat. Challenges always lie ahead, but we need to take time each year to celebrate our achievements and the people who make them possible. To weave a celebratory thread throughout the watershed community, in 2001, River Network created the River Heroes Award ., a competitive, national awards program seeking to honor and recognize noteworthy heroes of the river and watershed conservation movement. Nominations may be made for any individual (board member, staff or volunteer) who has successfully worked with a river conservation organization to improve a river and its watershed or who over the years has made a consistent and substantial contribution to the growth and sustainability of the organization. Selected nominees will be honored at the River Heroes banquet (Monday, ... [Read More]
