Value Chain Management Rhode Island
EPA > National Estuary Program > Challenges Facing Our Estuaries These key management issues are common to many coastal watersheds across the country. Therefore, the transfer and exchange of scientific and management information among NEPs and to other coastal watershed managers is critical to ensure success in restoring and protecting the health of our nation's estuaries. ... The National Estuary Programs are working to address the problem of hydrologic alteration. Click here to learn more about the various management approaches the NEPs are taking towards the freshwater inflow problem. ... [Read More]

National Park Service, Natural Resource Year in Review--2002 The Atlantic horseshoe crab ( Limulus polyphemus ), a species more closely related to spiders than to true crabs, inhabits coastal waters from Maine to the Yucatán peninsula. Although horseshoe crabs are not standard fare at seafood restaurants, they are economically and ecologically important. Horseshoe crabs are harvested for bait in conch and eel fisheries and to obtain limulus amebocyte lysate, a substance used by the biomedical industry. In addition to their intrinsic value, horseshoe crabs are an important link in the food chain. Adults are eaten by juvenile loggerhead turtles, a species that is federally listed as threatened, and the crabs eggs, which are deposited on sandy beaches during high tides, are a preferred food item for many invertebrates, fish, and migratory birds. Horseshoe crab populations along the Atlantic Coast of the United States have recently been in decline. While the reasons for the coastwide decline are not known, human harvest is believed to b ... ATSDR - Health Consultation - Hometown Properties-North Kingstown, Washington County, Rhode Island The derivation of a comparison value uses conservative exposure assumptions, resulting in values that are much lower than exposure concentrations that have been observed to cause adverse health effects. These comparison values are therefore protective of public health in essentially all exposure situations. That is, if the concentrations in the exposure medium are less than the comparison values, the exposures are not of health concern and no further analysis of the pathway is required. While concentrations below the comparison value are not expected to lead to any observable health effect, it should not be inferred that a concentration greater than the comparison value will necessarily lead to adverse effects. Depending on site-specific environmental exposure factors (for example, duration of exposure) and human activities that ... [Read More]

M/V World Prodigy Oil Spill - Northeast Region - DARP The earliest evidence of human habitation of the Rhode Island coast datesback to 6,500 B.C. (Hale, 1980). Narragansett Bay has been a centerpieceof activities associated with local native American populations, the developmentof colonial America, the birth of the industrial revolution, the defeatof the Axis forces in World War II, and the origin of scientifically basedcoastal zone management planning. Fish, shellfish, and other natural resourceshave been exploited by the region's inhabitants for an estimated 8,500 years(Hale, 1980). The aboriginal, colonial, industrial, and modern inhabitantsof the Narragansett basin have all utilized the natural resources of thebay leaving behind a rich history of their different coastal dependent cultures.Remnant cultural resources of the historic occupants of the bay watershedare believed to be widely distributed in the estuary and along its shores. These resources include native American Indian settlements, battlegrounds, farms, buildings, shipyards, ... EPA > Polluted Runoff (Nonpoint Source Pollution) > CM/CV Introduction When Congress passed the Coastal Zone Act Reauthorization Amendments of1990, known as CZARA, it required EPA to describe sets of management measuresto be used for the control of pollution from various nonpoint sources, including marinas and recreational boating. States will incorporate thesemeasures into their own nonpoint source pollution control programs to helpachieve water quality standards. One of the stipulations that Congress made inthe law was that the management measures be economically achievable so as notto impose any unnecessary financial hardship on those who will be required toimplement the management measures. EPA, therefore, did complete economicanalyses that demonstrate the economic achievability of the management measuresfor marinas and recreational boating in its Guidance Specifying ManagementMeasures for Sources of Nonpoint Pollution in Coastal Waters. ...
