State of Rhode Island: Department of the Attorney General
· Within a few minutes, Chattelle emerged from the club and he and Ortega engaged in a fistfight. With the Keg Room closing in the early morning hours of August 31st, bar patrons spilled out onto the street to watch the action. According to witnesses, the fight continued as a fairly evenly matched fistfight—with the friends of both Ortega and Chattelle joining in the yelling and screaming—until Ortega was sucker-punched in the back of the head. At this point, Ortega hit the ground. · According to a witness, Heredia kicked Ortega around the head while Ortega was sprawled on the ground. Ortega then got up, and walked around the corner onto Friendship Street with a friend. Heredia and a group of four to six others proceeded to knock Ortega to the ground and kick him in the face and body. Two others attacked Ortega’s friend, who was a witness to this portion of the attack, along with a Keg Room bouncer. Providence Police arrived on the scene, and the crowd scattered. A w ... Rhode Island Public Defender Client Handbook - Representation
The Public Defender Office can only represent people charged with crimes (or who are about to be charged with crimes); it does not represent people on such matters as divorces, car accidents, wills and consumer complaints. If you are indigent and have a non-criminal problem, you may be eligible for free representation by Rhode Island Legal Services. Both agencies have standards for financial eligibility. If you receive public assistance you are almost certainly eligible; even if you do not, you may be eligible. The main office of Legal Services is at 56 Pine Street, Providence, Rhode Island (Tel: 401-274-2652) and there are offices elsewhere in the State. Legal Services sometimes will take cases for people who are not strictly eligible, and those cases are handled by volunteer lawyers. You may also contact the Rhode Island Bar Association, Lawyer Referral Service. The Lawyer Referral Service maintains a list of attorneys willing to take cases where people cannot afford full fees.
