State of Rhode Island: State Police
The incident was not unlike those on the western frontier described earlier. The difference, though, was the growing capability of the State Police. Even though the rolling Atlantic provided a difficult hazard, the force moved swiftly into action. What followed is best described by a news account which appeared in the Providence Journal: "The Rhode Island Mounted Police yesterday captured Block Island and made it for the first time since the enactment of the Eighteenth Amendment a part of the United States." The story failed to note that the "noble experiment" had become effective on January 16, 1920 without ratification by this state. A large area, estimated at over 5,000,000square kilometers, of Eastern Canadaand the United States (south toVirginia and west to the MississippiRiver) was affected by a magnitude 7shock on February 28, 1925. The epicenterwas in the St. Lawrence Riverregion; minor damage was confined toa narrow belt on both sides of theriver. Intensity V effects were felt onBlock Island and at Providence;intensity IV, at Charlestown. The majorsubmarine earthquake (magnitude 7.2)in the vicinity of the Grand Banks ofNewfoundland on November 18, 1929,was felt throughout the New EnglandStates. Moderate vibrations were felton Block Island and at Chepachet, Newport,Providence, and Westerly.Another widely felt earthquake occurredon November 1, 1935, near Timiskaming,Quebec, Canada. Measured atmagnitude 6.25, the shock was felt(intensity IV) on Block Island and atProvidence and Woonsocket.
