June 28, 2005 - As Beach Season Heats Up, Governor Carcieri Receives $213,140 EPA Grant to Monitor Rhode Island Coastal Beaches - At Warwick City Hall , Governor Donald Carcieri accepted a $213,140 grant from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that will assist Rhode Island ’s efforts to improve and expand water quality monitoring and public notification programs at state coastal beaches. The pondand beach nesting areas should be completely protected fromdisturbance, and conservation restrictions placed on as much ofthe already lightly developed portions of the pondshores aspossible. The few large undeveloped properties on Quicksand andTunipers Ponds should be considered for purchase in fee orthrough the purchase of development rights by privateconservation organizations already active in this area to ensurea continued variety of habitats and to reduce human pressures onthe ponds and adjacent beaches. Protection and management of theentire shoreline length of this complex should be sought as ameans of ensuring the long-term survival of beach-nesting birdpopulations in this general area. Providence – Today, the Rhode Island Department of Health recommended closing two public beaches in Newport Harbor due to sewage contamination. The two beaches are King Park Beach (Newport) and Fort Adams State Beach. The contamination comes from the discharge of an unknown amount of sewage from the Newport Sewage Treatment Facility since late this morning. ...
