The Act became effective immediately upon its passage. That action therefore identifies April 2, 1925 as the precise date of the founding of the Rhode Island State Police. The legislation further authorized the immediate appointment of the first Superintendent. That followed swiftly. One week later, on April 9th, 1925, Governor Aram J. Pothier of Woonsocket nominated Everitte St. John Chaffee of Providence to be Superintendent for the term ending January 31, 1930. The Senate confirmed the appointment. The first Superintendent of the Rhode Island State police took his oath of office and began his enormous task.
