Nicole Johnson Baker has served as an international spokesperson for diabetes issues for more than six years. A former Miss America, she travels extensively to promote awareness, prevention, and early detection of the “hidden killer,” diabetes, and spends several days a month lobbying on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. for diabetes-related causes. Ms. Johnson Baker was recently appointed the first Ambassador for the International Diabetes Federation’s Life for a Child program. Children with type 1 diabetes in many developing countries have a life expectancy of only 1 to 2 years. This program provides care, supplies, and education for children with diabetes in underserved areas. In addition, she works with state legislatures to improve insurance coverage and general health care for the millions of individuals with diabetes. Ms. Johnson Baker is also one of the hosts of dLife , a weekly diabetes talk show on CNBC which aims to create a community and “clubhous ... [Read More]

25th National Veterans Wheelchair Games
Huber is one person who knows about rising above life’s challenges. In 1971, he was just 19 years old and serving in the Navy as a jet engine mechanic at the Naval Air Station in Meridian, Mississippi. After a long tour and anxious to get home, he accepted a ride from a fellow sailor and was seriously injured in a car accident, leaving him a high-level quadriplegic. It wasn’t until 1986 that he was convinced to try the Games, then only in their infancy. “I was afraid,” Huber admits — afraid of traveling, and nervous about trying things he wasn’t sure he’d be able to do. But he credits his wife, Mary, and staff at the Ann Arbor VA Medical Center for convincing him to attend. Those Games “ turned my life around,” he said. According to Mary, “he was ‘geeked!’ Ken has always had such a good attitude, but this got him to really realize there was still so much more he could do.” ... [Read More]
