The University of Puerto Rico is a second-time participant in the Solar Decathlon. This time, the university is pooling the efforts of 52 students to form one of the largest teams in the 2005 competition, combining the expertise of 8 architecture students, 8 business administration students, and 36 engineering students. The solar house project is incorporated into several multidisciplinary courses offered at the university, and those courses have helped to finalize the team's design. The America Reads program at the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico began on August 29, 1997. An orientation session and two workshops were offered to the participating students with the participation of the teachers from the selected schools. Involved in the program are the following schools: Julio Selles Sola, Lopez Sicardo, Las Mercedes, Isaac Gonzalez, and Roosevelt schools. Teams are made up of students pursuing degrees in engineering, architecture, computer science, public relations, marketing, and other disciplines. Just like the Olympic decathletes, they will need to draw on all of their strengths and skills to troubleshoot, communicate, dream, and build these original solar homes. DOE Solar Decathlon: Universidad Politécnica de Madrid
The UPM team faces some daunting challenges as they compete in the 2005 Solar Decathlon, not the least of which is the need to ship the house from Spain to the United States. Team members estimate that this gives them about a month less than other contestants to prepare their house. Another major challenge is their lack of familiarity with U.S. regulations on house construction, such as the National Electrical Code.
