Gettysburg National Military Park Home Page The Battle of Gettysburg was a critical turning point in the American Civil War, a conflict that determined the fate of the United States. The site where these two great armies clashed was first preserved by a small group of patriotic citizens and later by the country as a whole. The Gettysburg National Military Park Virtual Tour Participants, bystanders, and intellectuals all attempted to put the story of this great event into words. For most soldiers, the battle was summed up in letters and diaries written in the hours, days and weeks following the close of the campaign. Civilians, too, shared their stories. Historians and scholars discussed and analyzed army movements and controversies, and as time passed Gettysburg's importance grew. Veterans returned to walk the place where they had faced death on portions of battlefield that had been purchased for preservation by a citizen's group determined to preserve the history of the battle and the scars left on the Pennsylvania countryside. The park's archival collection contains original Civil War manuscripts, such as diaries, letters, and selected unit records, as well as manuscripts, photos, and maps relative to the development and history of Gettysburg National Military Park. The park's historic objects (museum) collection consists of three-dimensional items related to the Civil War, the battle of Gettysburg, and the post-war commemoration of the battle. FCIC: Gettysburg National Military Park In 1895, the battlefield was established by Act of Congress as Gettysburg National Military Park. In that year, the Gettysburg Battlefield Memorial Associationfounded April 30, 1864, to commemorate "the great deeds of valor . . . and the signal events which render these battlegrounds illustrious"transferred its holdings of 600 acres of land to the Federal Government. In 1933, the park was transferred from the War Department to the Department of the Interior, to be administered by the National Park Service. Today, the park has some 30 miles of paved roads and an area of close to 3,000 acres. More than 1,400 monuments, tablets, and markers have been erected over the years to indicate the positions where infantry, artillery, and cavalry units fought. Hundreds of Federal and Confederate cannon are located on the field in the approximate positions of batteries during the battle. Our Documents - Home Acting under the instruction of the Virginia Convention, Richard Henry Lee on June 7, 1776, introduced a resolution in the Second Continental Congress proposing independence for the colonies. The Lee Resolution contained three parts: a declaration of independence, a call to form foreign alliances, and "a plan for confederation." The document that is included on page 22 is the complete resolution in Richard Henry Lee's handwriting. ... Gettysburg National Military Park Planning Pages National Park Service Northeast Regional Director Marie Rust signed the Record of Decision, completing final approval of the "General Management Plan and Environmental Impact Statement (GAMIN) for Gettysburg National Military Park" in December, 1999.
