Start up of the City of Beaverton's new fluoridation facilities got underway, beginning with continuous very low levels of fluoride on May 14, 2004. The fluoride level was slowly ramped up to the target level of 0.9 parts per million (ppm) on May 17, 2004. City water customers and consumers located near the westerly entry point (Millikan Boulevard and Tualatin Valley Highway) of drinking water into the City began receiving low levels of fluoridated water on May 14, 2004. Drinking water for most City residents travels a distance of 19 miles to Beaverton through a large diameter transmission pipeline from the Joint Water Commission water treatment plant south of Forest Grove. Beaverton adds fluoride to its water after it leaves the Joint Water Commission water treatment plant and prior to entering the City for distribution.
