Oregon Department Forestry Private & Community Forests Program
The Forest Practices Research & Monitoring Program  conducts studies and surveys to monitor forest conditions in Oregon and expand scientific knowledge. Areas of study have included topics such as monitoring fish presence, shade conditions above streams, compliance with best management practices, and compliance and effectiveness of forest practice rules. Their findings have been presented to advisory committees made up of a diverse group of public stakeholders who make recommendations to the Board of Forestry and the State Forester about implementing potential changes to the Forest Practices Act rules. FPA rules are not static--as new knowledge is obtained, the rules change, as appropriate. The Forest Practices Act in Oregon is responsive to changing environmental and social needs.  ... Energy Facility Siting Climate Change and Oregon
It may be because we feel powerless to solve the problem: We can´t stop overnight our need to burn gasoline and other fossil fuels, the main source of gases that contribute to global warming and climate change.   Or it may be because we´re confused about the problem: The greenhouse gases we produce trap extra heat in the atmosphere. But scientists can´t say exactly how these gases will affect the world or when their levels will reach a crisis point.   However, experts from Oregon and around the world say there´s one thing we know for sure: The balance of scientific evidence suggests that our use of coal, oil and natural gas for energy is already having an impact on the world´s climate.   The concentration of carbon dioxide -- a key greenhouse gas -- has increased 35 percent in the atmosphere since industrialization. The earth has warmed by more than 1 degree Fahrenheit over the last century. The nine warmest years in this centu ... [Read More]

Motor Carrier Transportation Oregon Truck Safety
Carriers must conduct random controlled substances and alcohol tests throughout each year. The controlled substances tests must involve enough drivers to equal at least 50 percent of the average number of driver positions. The alcohol tests must involve enough drivers to equal at least 10 percent of the average number of driver positions and they must be performed immediately prior to, during, or immediately after a driver is on duty. All drivers must have an equal chance of being selected and must be selected throughout the year using a scientific method.  FMCSR, Part 382.305 ... [Read More]

Oregon Emergency Management Tsunamis in Oregon
Recent scientific studies investigating buried coastal sand deposits at sites stretching from Northern California to British Columbia, Canada, have lead researchers to the conclusion that major earthquakes capable of generating tsunamis impact our area about every 300 to 600 years. These layers of buried sand were carried inland by the advancing tsunami waves and left as evidence of this infrequent yet devastating natural hazard. Unlike tsunamis generated in distant locations, the nearby earthquake that generates a local tsunami may be the only warning coastal residents receive before the tsunami waves flood low lying locations within minutes after the earthquake occurs. ... Evidence-based Practice Centers
The EPCs develop evidence reports and technology assessments based on rigorous, comprehensive syntheses and analyses of the scientific literature on topics relevant to clinical, social science/behavioral, economic, and other health care organization and delivery issues. EPC reports and assessments emphasize explicit and detailed documentation of methods, rationale, and assumptions. These scientific syntheses may include meta-analyses and cost analyses. All EPCs collaborate with other medical and research organizations so that a broad range of experts is included in the development process. ... [Read More]
