The Northwest Fisheries Science Center of NMFS has recently located several of its researchprograms at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, Oregon. This site, operated byOregon State University, attracts thousands of visitors each year to its public aquarium/museum.NASA recently funded a major renovation of the public wing following the opening of theOregon Coast Aquarium on the same campus. The primary emphasis of the new public wing willbe to highlight ongoing research at the Center, of which NOAA is a major part. This proposal addresses areas of mutual interest between components of NMFS and OAR inSeattle, WA and Newport, OR. The several goals of the proposed effort is to 1) provideconnectivity for the new NWFSC facility at Newport, OR through the existing networkdeveloped by PMEL; 2) provide public access to NOAA research through a WWW Home Page;3) apply state-of-the-art Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to allow efficientcomparison of several sources of information developed by the AFSC and PMEL on thespatial/temporal distributions of large marine mammal species in the open ocean; and 4) makethis GIS system available over the WWW.
