National Park Service: Architecture in the Parks (Oregon Caves Chateau)
Oregon Caves was discovered in 1874 and became a national monument in1909. The resort potential of the area had been promoted during the latenineteenth century but little development was accomplished, perhapsbecause of the area's remoteness. By 1913 the congressionalrepresentative had introduced a bill to establish Oregon Caves NationalPark hoping to remove it from U.S. Forest Service jurisdiction and thusfacilitate the construction of a hotel and a good road for the area.Changes in U.S. Forest Service regulations regarding leasing lands forhotel and recreation sites in 1915 stimulated interest again in theresort potential of the caves; but not until 1923 did local businessmenform the Oregon Caves Company and take over food services, overnightaccommodations, and tours through the cave. ... Over the next few years, many of the pioneers went home, if not forgood, at least for a respite from the arduous nature of duty on the Pacificcoast. Richard Cutts went home to the East Coast on leave of absence forseven months returning to San Francisco in mid-1853. George Davidson andJames Lawson went east in November 1854 returning to San Francisco in Aprilof the following year. The trip was nowhere near as arduous as that of1849 and 1850 as regular steamship service had been established and thetrip from East Coast to West Coast only took a month. Alexander Harrisonand John Rockwell would leave in 1854 for home, never to return to theWest Coast with the Coast Survey. The artist William B. McMurtrie, whosebeautiful views graced the early charts of the West Coast, would also returnhome in 1854 but would return to the West Coast for a few more years servicebefore the Civil War. ...
