OK.gov was developed and is managed by NIC Oklahoma in close partnership with Oklahoma state government. The project's work is overseen by the Information Services Division of the Oklahoma Office of State Finance and the State Governmental Internet Applications Review Board. Ok.gov currently has a staff of 10 full-time employees based in Oklahoma City, who manage the ongoing operation and marketing for both the portal and individual applications. ... OK.gov is unique in that it's a model for cooperation. It is a government service administered for the good of the public, while benefiting from the entrepreneurial spirit and efficiencies found in private business. OK.gov was created by an act of the Oklahoma House Legislature HB 1662 in 2001 for the purpose of providing all Oklahomans equal access to governmental and other public information via the Internet. The initial phase, funded by the Oklahoma Office of State Finance, created the state portal and established the foundation for all levels of government to have an online presence. The second phase involves contracting with state agencies to bring their services online. Funding options for this phase include subscription fees, fees for premium services or cost-sharing with the agency. The name Oklahoma comes from two Choctaw Indian words, okla, which means "people," and humma, which means "red." In 1889, Congress opened up 2 million acres for white settlement (it was previously open only to Native Americans who were forced to leave their homelands), and the first of a number of land runs began. Some of the state's settlers were called "Sooners" because they had already staked their land claims before the land was officially opened for settlement.
