Rates of infectious diseases also help us understand the health status of our state. One of our biggest public health concerns is the potential for new and emerging, or re-emerging, infectious diseases. Over the past three years, we have been in the throws of an unprecedented statewide epidemic of infectious hepatitis A. The state rate has been as much as eight times higher than the national rate. Many of Oklahoma's counties have seriously high rates (Figure 24) . [Through diligence on the part of public health workers, the state rate is declining, hopefully heralding the end of the epidemic.
