The Altus II and its sister ship, the Altus I, are variants of the Predator surveillance drone built by General Atomics/Aeronautical Systems Inc. They are designed for high-altitude, long-duration scientific sampling missions and are powered by turbocharged piston engines. After just 1 year of full-time work at Oklahoma's Altus Air Force Base, Wildlife Services (WS) has made such an impact that the base was recently recognized for its efforts to reduce bird strikes and improve aircraft safety. This spring Altus was honored with the Air Force Education and Training Command Best Practices Award.
