OKLAHOMA-Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) Alcohol/Drug Education Program
An important statewide athletic event is the annual Oklahoma Coach's Clinic, at which more than 4,000 Oklahoma coaches meet in Oklahoma City, for two days of workshops. At the clinic, the FCA sponsors a men's breakfast, a ladies luncheon and a booth. At the booth, the FCA distributed traffic safety brochures and promotional cups reading, Buckle Up. A featured speaker at the breakfast and luncheon, provided a traffic safety testimonial. At the 1999 clinic, the head football coach at a local high school described leaving for vacation and remembering to wear his seat belt because he was wearing his game day t-shirt. Thirty years later, how do humanities programs rate with football games in Oklahoma? "I never counted," May says. "But getting to as many counties and towns as we do with five hundred or so events and grants each year is figuratively comparable." ...

When Anita May became director of the Oklahoma Humanities Council in 1976, her goal was to bring Oklahomans as many humanities programs as there were Friday night football games. Among sports/recreation-related injuries, the major subgroups resulting in injury were diving (37%), football (17%), and horseback riding or rodeo (12%). Gunshots accounted for 74% of the violence-related spinal cord injuries; assaults accounted for 18% and stabbings for 8%. SCIs among blacks were more likely to be due to violence (33%) than among Native Americans (13%) and whites (5%). Mike Wimmer grew up in Muskogee, Oklahoma, a town immortalized by Merle Haggard, where one had to learn to use his imagination to find fun. "The one thing I wanted to be more than an illustrator," he says, "was a middle linebacker for the Chicago Bears. As a high school football star, I was honored with many team awards and made the all-state football team. I thought I had it made, but while playing in the all-state game I learned what really big was (I was 205 pounds of raw muscle). I could not see over those guys when they were bent over. Don Cooper, M.D., appointed by the Governor , is Emeritus Director of the Oklahoma State University Student Health Center. With over thirty years experience in sports medicine, Dr. Cooper is known throughout the state as the "Jock Doc". He was an active member of the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports under Presidents Regan and Bush, a U.S. Olympic team physician for the XIX Olympiad, and a sports medicine consultant to the NCAA Football Rules Committee. Dr. Cooper has served on numerous state and national boards and committees, testified before Congress, appeared on national television shows, and studied and lectured on sports medicine in China and the Soviet Union. He was also the football coach for Yukon High School and high school principal. He then left the school system to become a sales manager for Beechcraft Distributors. While he was sales manager, he began buying stock in a bank in Southeastern Oklahoma. He served on its Board of Directors and later became the president of the bank. While he was at the bank, he bought a real estate company and an insurance agency; his wife operated the insurance agency.
