Town of Dayton, Indiana > History
The town probably began as a market place for the people on the surrounding farms. Storekeepers were among the earliest settlers. Very quickly, however, the town acquired a number of small industries. A sawmill and then a gristmill were built. Coopers, broommakers, and chairmakers settled here. Wagon makers set up shop. After the Civil War, artisans arrived from Pennsylvania who set up a carriage factory that became one of the principal employers in town. The business carried on until the early 1900s, and for a time a car dealership operated. Then in the 1970s in the fields west of town a car plant was built, the modern incarnation of the transportation industry that has made its home in the town all these years. KinderCare Learning Centers, Inc., Columbus, Ohio --The Department reached an agreement with KinderCare, the nation'slargest proprietary child care provider, that will allow childrenwith diabetes to enroll at any of KinderCare's 1100 centers nationwide.The agreement, which serves as a model for the child care industrythroughout the country, requires KinderCare to perform finger-sticktests at the request of parents in order to monitor the bloodsugar level of their children and to take appropriate action.It does not require that KinderCare administer insulin injections.KinderCare also agreed to engage in a three-year ADA traininginitiative for its employees and to appoint a disability servicescoordinator. He is a member of Teamsters Local2040. He went on strike on July 13,1995, and has not returned to work. During the strike he did picket duty. By letter, dated January 31, 1997, he was informed that he was beingdischarged for harassing, assaulting, and intimidating a carrier as sheattempted to deliver newspapers on January 9, 1997. Kelleher testified that he made the decision to dischargeTurner after reviewing a number of documents.
