National Sea Grant Programs
aking full advantage of regional expertise and commitment, Sea Grant pursues a national agenda through a highly interactive network of Sea Grant Colleges and research institutions. Headquartered at many of the nation's premier universities, Sea Grant programs are located in coastal and Great Lake states, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. A national network of 30 Sea Grant Colleges and institutional programs shares research, outreach and education to solve old problems and explore new uses for the world's marine, Great Lakes and coastal resources. Sea Grant activities exist at the nexus of local, state, national and sometimes international interests. In this way, local needs receive national attention, and a national commitment is fulfilled at the local level. Contact the institution in the region of interest for more information. ... Route 23--Outline of the Geology in Ohio
During the first half of the Paleozoic Era, which began 510 million years ago and ended 225 million years ago, Ohio was covered by warm shallow seas in which limestone and limy shales were deposited and in which a variety of now-extinct marine life lived. There were breaks in the deposition of marine sediments and changes in the organisms during this long interval, but it was not until the Mississippian Period, beginning about 345 million years ago, that the character of the sediments began to change. The shallow seas in Ohio were filled with sandy sediments, which would later become sandstone, deposited by streams that built deltas into the Mississippian sea. These rocks are exposed in the region between Chillicothe and Portsmouth and elsewhere in the east-central part of Ohio. During the latter part of the Paleozoic Era (Pennsylvanian and Permian Periods), the sediments were deposited principally in nonmarine environments in Ohio; the sea intruded into Ohio only for very brief interv ... Ohio's Prehistoric Past
During the Cambrian and Ordovician periods of thePaleozoic era, from 570 million to 438 million years ago, small invertebrates evidentlydominated the warm, shallow, salty sea. The limestone rock layer that formed during theOrdovician period, which is covered by as many as 5,000 feet of more recent rock layerselsewhere in the state, was tilted upward by powerful geologic forces millions of yearsago, and today is exposed just below the soil in southwest Ohio, near Cincinnati. TheOrdovician limestone is studded with well-preserved fossils of the shelled sea creatures.Perhaps the best known of all fossils in Ohio are the trilobites, a class of hard-shelledarthropods that teemed in the Cambrian and Ordovician seas, but was extinct by the closeof the Paleozoic era. The vast numbers of good specimens of a variety of invertebrates, and the proximity of the ancient Ordovician limestone rock layer to the surface makesouthwest Ohio a world-famous destination for fossil collectors. ... Ohio DNR Div. of Watercraft: Aquatic Nuisance Species
With the creation of the St. Lawrence Seaway came the opportunity for exotic aquatic species to hitch a ride to North America. Beginning with the introduction of the sea lamprey in the 1950Ős and the present invasion of animals like the zebra mussel and the round goby and plants such as Eurasian watermilfoil, non-native species have spread through the Great Lakes and interior portions of the continent. These uninvited guests have overstayed their welcome, causing economic hardship as well as threatening the diversity and abundance of native species. ... [Read More]

Headlands Beach
Natural treasures abound here, on the land, in the water, and far below the surface. Just beyond the sand, the headlands are forested in a variety of hardwoods which historically included chestnut trees, as well as maple, oak, elm, hickory, walnut, cherry, tulip tree, beech and ash. The dunes harbor a surprising array of plants native to the Atlantic coastal plains, such as sea rocket, beach pea, seaside spurge, beach grass and purple sand grass. These rare plants hitched a ride at the close of the last Ice Age as the ancient lake shrunk away from its ocean neighborhood. When the Grand River wriggled out of its ancient bed and carved itself a new channel hundreds of years ago, the soggy soil it left behind blossomed into the forested swamps and grassy wet expanses of Mentor Marsh. ...
