A Nation Repays Its Debt: The National Soldiers' Home and Cemetery in Dayton, OH
Upon entering Dayton National Cemetery, the hilly landscape is dotted with uniform marble headstones, all in neat rows with the Dayton Soldiers Memorial standing tall and proud in the center. The more than 100 acres of cemetery landscape is bathed with sunshine today, as there are few trees to shade visitors and mourners. Except for the sounds of birds, there is a solemn quiet. As Regional Director for OCRC, Mrs. Walker has spearheaded a variety of innovative educational and outreach programs. She is the Creator and Executive Producer of the Commission’s television program “Many Faces One Cause”. The program highlights the Commission’s operations, the laws it enforces, and introduces special program initiatives of the Commission. Under Mrs. Walker’s leadership, the Dayton staff has been instrumental in providing tutorial services in reading to public middle school students; this activity has resulted in the staff donating over 600 books to the school’s libraries. Because of her commitment to literacy, Mrs. Walker services as a Board Member and Officer of the Miami Valley Literacy Council. Groundwater on site and off site was contaminated with VOCs.Exposure to vinyl chloride, chloroethane, 1,2- dichloroethene, and1,1,1-trichloroethane through ingestion, inhalation, and contactwith the skin may have occurred and may occur in the future. Thereare a number of primary drinking water sources in the vicinity ofPowell Road Landfill, which have been or have the potential tobecome contaminated. A well field supplying the city of Dayton islocated 1.5 miles south of the site. In addition, the city ofDayton is proposing a second well field northwest of the site. Thecommunity of Eldorado Plat, just south of the site, uses privatewell supplies. The communities of Huber Heights and part of MadRiver Township are supplied by wells (Ohio Suburban Water Company)located .75 miles south of the site. The electric street car, invented in Germany, took the world by storm in the early 1880s, arriving in Dayton in 1888 on a new downtown route. Called the White Line Electric Railway, it was a roaring success. By 1910, five separate companies had built other lines.
