Ohio State Parks Magazine - Help Wanted:
O hio’s first state park naturalist, Bill Price, shared his knowledge of the natural world with visitors to Lake Hope State Park in the early 1960s. His programs were so popular that park visitors clamored for similar programs when they visited other state parks. The first annual Hocking Hills Winter Hike in 1966 started the long and rich tradition of special events in Ohio State Parks. In the late 1960s, the Junior Naturalist and Naturalist Aide programs were initiated to help entertain young park visitors and further their appreciation of the natural world. ... [Read More]

The Corporation for National and Community Service
Why It Works: The project has strong support at every level, including the governor and his State of Ohio Security Task Force. Ohio Citizen Corps, which is comprised of state agency representatives, volunteer organizations, and professional associations, has been closely integrated into the state's homeland security strategy and initiatives. The success of the program will be decided at the local level with volunteer recruitment. Therefore, grassroots recruitment materials can be customized for use by each county. The Ohio Community Service Council's website ( www.serveohio.org ) was also redesigned to provide a simple volunteer registration process, serve as the Citizen Corps Council information resource, spotlight volunteer accomplishments, and to provide direct links to representatives of the State of the Ohio Security Task Force. Ohio Citizen Corps has also forged a relationship with the Points of Light Foundation and has integrated its (800) VOLUNTEER hotline as an alternativ ... [Read More]

Rings around the Sun
: Complex ice-crystal displays are especially common in the Arctic and Antarctic, even being produced by the full moon during the months-long winter night! Here's a description of one seen by Robert Peary on his last voyage toward the North Pole: "On the evening of November 11 [1908], there was a brilliant paraselene, two distinct halos and eight false moons being visible in the southern sky. This phenomenon is not unusual in the Arctic, and is caused by the frost crystals in the air. On this particular occasion the inner halo had a false moon at its zenith, another at its nadir, and one each at the right and left. Outside was another halo, with four other moons." - Robert E. Peary , The North Pole: Its Discovery in 1909 Under the Auspices of the Peary Arctic Club , 1910; Dover Publications, 1986, pp. 175-176. ... [Read More]
