Washington, DC—The Honorable Ralph Regula (OH-16) and Dr. Robert Martin, Director of the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) hosted a workshop July 7, 2005 at the National First Ladies’ Library in Canton, Ohio. The workshop focused primarily on the Institute’s Librarians for the 21st Century grant program designed to recruit new librarians and help offset a looming national shortage. Over 30 library professionals from Ohio’s 16th District attended. (According to the American Library Association, Ohio leads the nation in library use. National First Ladies' Library
The grand opening for the newly renovated education and research center at the National First Ladies' Library was held Sept. 4, 2003, and attended by 400 invited guests, including first lady Laura Bush. The center, which received $1 million through two state appropriations, houses a comprehensive collection of artifacts and writings from 41 former first ladies. Named after William McKinley, the 25th president of the United States, this museum serves as a valuable educational resource. It is located in Canton, where McKinley lived for a part of his life. Within the museum, the Ramsayer Research Library preserves photographs, correspondence, books, magazines and papers pertaining to the history of Stark County and the American political scene of the late 19th to the early 20th century.
