Geologic History of Western Ohio The most recent chapter in the geologic history of western Ohio began approximately 2 million years ago when a slight cooling in the earth's average temperature allowed snow and ice to accumulate to great thicknesses in the high northern latitudes of North American and Eurasia. When this ice became sufficiently thick, it flowed radially outward from those areas where it was thickest, much like children's play putty will do if rolled into a ball and allowed to sit awhile. Such large, flowing sheets of ice are called glaciers. At least three times during the last 2 million years western Ohio has been invaded by continent-sized glaciers moving southward out of Canada. These large bodies of advancing ice blocked and diverted streams and deposited a veneer of finely ground rock particles and other debris across two-thirds of the Ohio land area.
