Dragon Complex, Grand Canyon NP ...

On the morning of Thursday, July 14th, park staff recovered the body of an man matching the description of Joseph R. Miller, missing on Lewis Lake since Saturday, July 2nd. The park will be able to confirm identification once dental and autopsy results have been completed. Miller, 59, was last seen by visitors canoeing on the northeast section of the lake. He was by himself and was not wearing a life jacket. At the time, there were rough waters with two- to four-foot waves, high winds of 25 to 35 mph, and water temperatures of 54 degrees. A search was started later that day when a backpack, life jacket, canoe, and several other items identified as belonging to Miller were found along the northeast shore of the lake. Approximately 15 people in three boats completed the mission. A dive recovery team, consisting of three rangers from Grand Teton National Park, recovered the body. An independent contractor employed side-scan sonar to find the body approximately 800 feet from shore in the n ... [Read More]

Grand Teton NP: A Place Called Jackson Hole (Chapter 12)
In Jackson Hole, the first roads were primitive wagon trails. Thetownship maps of William O. Owen, surveyed in 1892 and 1893, and theU.S. Geological Survey Grand Teton Quadrangle of 1899 document the earlyroad system. Owen's 1892 map of Township 41 North, Range 116 West, showsan extensive network of wagon tracks in today's town of Jackson and theElk Refuge area. Roads existed in Spring Gulch and along East GrosVentre Butte up Botcher Hill. On Township 42 North, Range 116 West, which covered lands north of the confluence of the Gros Ventre and SnakeRivers, Owen mapped a road on the west side of the Snake that conformsin places to the present Moose-Wilson Road. No road is shown crossingthe Gros Ventre River. Since Owen did not survey the JennyLake—Timbered Island area, no record exists of roads in this areaduring the early 1890s. In surveying the quadrangle encompassing theAntelope Flats area, Owen plotted the "Old Road," a trail that begansoutheast of Blacktail Butte and went up Ant ... [Read More]

Why Does I-70 End in Cove Fort, Utah? - Ask the Rambler - Highway History - FHWA
Maps prepared for internal use indicate that the BPR considered the Spanish Fork terminus throughout the year, although a map of recommendations in July 1957 showed the route with a terminus at Cove Fort. During final analysis of proposed designations, the BPR identified the Denver-Spanish Fork route as a "Duplication of existing service" and included a map dated October 1, 1957, showing the Spanish Fork terminus with an offshoot drawn from an unidentified point in Utah to Cove Fort. ...
