NORTH DAKOTA-North Dakota Trial Lawyers Association Bike Helmet Distribution Program
To provide greater visibility, the North Dakota Trial Lawyers Association Bike Helmet Distribution Program was linked to the national Keeping Our Families Safe campaign of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America (ATLA), a program to educate the American public on the importance of prevention as a means to avoid life-altering injuries. To encourage young bike riders to wear bicycle helmets, North Dakota Trial Lawyer Association members donated funds to purchase brightly colored helmets featuring fun animals, flower and star designs. Helmets meeting national safety standards were obtained at reduced prices and provided to law enforcement agencies in 10 cities throughout the state. The bike helmets were available in three different sizes to accommodate toddlers, children ages 5 to 8 and youth ages 9 to 14. The first step in finding a lawyer is to call LRIS at (701) 255-1406 or 800-932-8880 (in-state only). The Lawyer Referral & Information Service office is open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9:00 a. m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. When you call, the LRIS staff person will ask you to briefly explain your legal issue. Your referral to a participating lawyer will be based on your location and area of law. The LRIS program charges a $30 fee for each referral. In order to give you a referral we must receive your payment of $30 in advance. Once your payment has been received, you will receive a confirmation letter in the mail. The confirmation letter will state the name and phone number of a North Dakota attorney (who will also receive a copy) for you to contact who practices in the area of law related to your problem. John Burke
John Burke was born on February 25, 1859, in Sigourney, Iowa. He was educated in local schools and received his law degree from the University of Iowa in 1886. In 1888 he migrated to the Dakota Territory, where he worked as a harvest hand and schoolmaster. He began his law practice in his hotel room and helped publish the town newspaper. By 1889 he was a successful lawyer and was elected Rolette County judge. He later became state's attorney of Rolette County.
