Introduction and General Description, North Dakota Partners for Fish and Wildlife,U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
The Prairie Pothole Region is legendary as North America’s foremost producer of ducks. And North Dakota, the top duck producing state in the Nation, lies in the heart of this region. Wetland densities in North Dakota commonly reach as high as 100-150 wetlands per square mile, making it not only an important breeding area for ducks, but also a key breeding and migratory area for over 70 wetland-dependent migratory bird species. With over 90% of North Dakota lands in private ownership, the North Dakota Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program is one of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s most important programs to restore and maintain habitat for migratory bird populations in the Central Flyway. ... Immigrants: North Dakota, Land of Opportunity
Northern Dakota Territory in 1870 was a sea of grass waiting for the plow share. With the end of the Civil War, America saw an unprecedented surge of immigrants land on its shores. Many of them were in search of free land offered through the Homestead Act. The immigrants and the land came together on the northern Great Plains from the 1870s into the early twentieth century. This explosion of people, farming, and building transformed, in a surprisingly short time, the flat, rich land of eastern North Dakota—the Red River Valley. The landscape became dotted with small farms, around which trees had been planted to shelter them from the almost incessant wind; with towns situated along the railroad lines like a web across the prairie; and the most impressive scene of all, the seemingly endless fields of grain. ... Natural Areas of North Dakota
Present day natural areas persist by benevolent land stewardship or by accident. Programs designed to recognize and spur protection of state-significant natural features on private or public lands have been created to maintain these features on the landscape. Nature preserves have been established through North Dakota Parks and Recreation Department and the Nature Conservancy. The State Parks and Recreation Department is mandated by the 1975 North Dakota Nature Preserves Act and Nature Conservancy is a nonprofit national conservation organization whose goal is to protect biological diversity. Closely related wildlife habitat protection has been identified among the goals of the new North Dakota Game and Fish Foundation. ... [Read More]

Theodore Roosevelt National Park (National Park Service)
Whenever he managed to spend time in the badlands, he became more and more alarmed by the damage that was being done to the land and its wildlife. He witnessed the virtual destruction of some big game species, such as bison and bighorn sheep. Overgrazing destroyed the grasslands and with them the habitats for small mammals and songbirds. Conservation increasingly became one of Roosevelt's major concerns. During his Presidency, Roosevelt established the US Forest Service and signed the 1906 Antiquities Act under which he proclaimed 18 national monuments. He also established 5 national parks, 51 wildlife refuges and 150 national forests. ... [Read More]
