Located just south of the Canadian border in north-central North Dakota, the Turtle Mountain Reservation is dotted with lakes, streams, rolling hills and forests, and ranges from 200 to 2,300 feet above sea level. Reservation land is owned by the tribe as well as by individual tribal members. The unincorporated town of Belcourt is the sole community. The reservations original 72,000 acres, established by treaty in 1882 and 1884, turned out to be inadequate for the tribes needs, so the government ultimately made allotments totaling almost 70,000 acres 250 miles west of the Turtle Mountain Reservation.
