Wind Energy Resource Atlas of the United States
Table D-3 gives the number of sites in the UnitedStates for which the difference in wind power class (measured minus estimated)was a given amount. At 65% of all new sites, the measured wind power waswithin one power class of the estimated power, and at 30% of these therewas no difference in the power class. The measured wind power at 35% of allnew sites differed by 2 or more classes from the estimated power; approximatelyhalf of these were greater and half less than the estimated power class. For special new sites (those sites installed specifically for wind energypurposes), 26% of the sites had the same class as the estimated power and57% of the sites were within ± 1 power class. Thus, 43% of the sites differedby 2 or more power classes from the estimated power class. ... [Read More]

DCA00MA005: Aberdeen, South Dakota, October 25, 1999
A Sunjet Aviation maintenance supervisor indicated that on October 22,1999, maintenance personnel were troubleshooting to correct a staggeredthrottle condition at takeoff power settings. During an engine run, a maintenanceinspector visually checked the left engine modulation valve and found "thespring not functioning." Maintenance personnel ordered a replacementmodulation valve that day from Learjet and received it on October 23, 1999;the left modulation valve was then removed and replaced. The repair tagfor the modulation valve that was removed from the accident airplane indicatedthe following: "Reason removed: ITT [interstage turbine temperature]split at altitude and cabin pressurization loss with reduced power setting." ... Avian Collision and Electrocution: An Annotated Bibliography
The authors advise managers to discourage construction of power lines at eagle wintering sites, especially near communal roosts. New power lines should be constructed without electrocution hazards, and some existing power line poles should be modified to eliminate hazards. Power lines can be a significant cause of mortality for eagles, especially in broad, flat valleys where natural perches are not available. (Artificial perches designed for eagles have been only partially successful.) Electrocution accidents are most likely to occur on poles that provide a good view of the surrounding terrain and on crossarms that are crosswise to prevailing winds. Raptor electrocutions occur primarily during winter when eagles concentrate near human developments. ... [Read More]

Effects of Management Practices on Grassland Birds: Greater Prairie-Chicken

About four days after the first copulation, hens begin laying one egg per day until reaching a clutch size of about 12 in Illinois (Westemeier, unpublished data ) and Wisconsin (Hamerstrom 1939, n = 66 nests). In Minnesota, the average clutch size of 26 nests was 13.2 (Svedarsky 1983). The incubation period ranges from 23-25 days (Gross 1930) and tends to be shorter for renesting attempts initiated later in the year (Svedarsky 1983). If nests are destroyed, hens may renest at least twice, but the clutch size will decrease in nests that are established later in the summer (Baker 1953, Robel and Ballard 1974, Svedarsky 1979). ... NASD: Safe Use of Tow Ropes, Cables and Chains
How can you make towing safer? First, clear the area of people, both helpers and watchers. Second, always hitch to the drawbar. Third, make sure everything - bumper, drawbar, hooks, chain, cable or nylon rope - is strong enough to handle the load. Fourth, make sure that all attachments are secure. Finally, apply the power smoothly without jerking - do not attempt to use the elasticity of nylon rope to increase your pulling power. ...

When using more than one vehicle for pulling, do not hitch them single file, with the total effort exerted on only one chain, cable or rope. Instead, hitch each vehicle independently, otherwise too much power can easily be applied to the final towing device (Figure 2). Carefully coordinate the efforts when more than one towing unit is used. ... [Read More]

and squeezed the trigger. Before the sound of the gunshot could echo off the walls, the ball splintered through the wooden door and struck Forsyth fair in the head. He was dead before his body hit the floor, the first of 400 or more Marshals killed performing their duties. ...

These two episodes. separated in time across the expanse of two centuries, illustrate the violent side to the history of U.S. Marshals and their Deputies. For more than a century after the establishment of the federal government in 1780, U.S. Marshals provided the only nationwide civilian police power available to the president, Congress, and the courts. ... "Transmission lines still have to be maintained, regardless of Federal generation capacity. Federal hydropower is not the only power that flows on the lines," said Mata. ...

Low water levels on the Colorado River present another type of challenge for Western. Reduced hydropower generation results in financial consequences as Western is forced to purchase power to meet its contractual commitments to our customers. ...
