With the end of the Civil War, America saw an unprecedented surge of immigrants land on its shores. Many of them were in search of free land offered through the Homestead Act. Region 8 News Release - EPA and Montana DEQ announce new proposed cleanup plan for the Milltown Reservoir Sediments Superfund Site in Montana The Record of Decision (ROD) for the Milltown Reservoir is expected this fall and the necessary planning, design, and site preparation would begin immediately thereafter. Infrastructure construction would occur in 2005 with dam removal planned for 2006. Removal of the 2.6 million cubic yards of contaminated sediment in the Reservoir would occur in 2006 and 2007. Channel stabilization and revegetation (restoration) activities would occur 2007-2008. North Dakota Birding Hotline Mark Gonzalez has completed a pair of Breeding Bird Surveys recently. Highlights from the Solen BBS in northern Sioux and southern Morton counties on July 1 included DICKCISSELS at eight separate stops, 150 LARK BUNTINGS, three RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS in two stops including one in the town of Solvn, at least 125 UPLAND SANDPIPERS in 30 stops, three LOGGERHEAD SHRIKES and a female and a first-summer male BLUE GROSBEAK, state firsts for Mark. Back on June 24, he did the Golva BBS. Highlights there included DICKCISSEL, BAIRD’S SPARROWS at two separate stops, two MARBLED GODWITS, BURROWING OWLS at two stops, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, three LONG-BILLED CURLEWS at two stops, more than 250 LARK BUNTINGS, and a SPRAGUE’S PIPIT in the last 10 seconds at the final stop.
