MANTEO, N.C.: Governor Easley recently appointed Ellen Sheffield Newbold of Rose Hill to serve as chair of the Roanoke Island Commission for a two-year term. Newbold brings a wealth of experience to the Commission. She was a public school teacher in North Carolina and supervisor of student teachers at the University of North Carolina (UNCG). She was a member of the University of North Carolina Board of Governors from 1989-1997 and the University of North Carolina at Wilmington Board of Trustees from 1972-1983. Newbold has served on the board of the Roanoke Island Historical Association since 1988, acting as treasurer for seven years and as chair since 1999. The historic Carolina Charter will be on public display from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Signed in March 24, 1663 by Britain’s King Charles II, the Carolina Charter granted lands in the new American colony to eight of the king’s supporters. The charter outlined the territory of Carolina as lying between 31-36° north latitude and extending from the Atlantic Ocean as far as the South Seas ( Tahiti). Today, the N.C. General Assembly descends directly from that colonial body that met under the rights granted in the Carolina Charter. The town of Bath, which was founded in 1705 and is now celebrating its tricentennial, was the first town in the Carolina colony, part of which later became North Carolina. Today North Carolina is one of only seven American states that possess its original charter.
