Hurricane History
Charley then came under the influence of an unseasonably strong mid-tropospheric trough that had dropped from the east-central United States into the eastern Gulf of Mexico. The hurricane turned north-northeastward and accelerated toward the southwest coast of Florida as it began to intensify rapidly; dropsonde measurements indicate that Charley's central pressure fell from 964 mb to 941 mb in 4.5 hours. By 10 am, the maximum winds had increased to near 125 m.p.h., and three hours later had increased to 145 m.p.h. - category 4 strength. Charley made landfall with maximum winds near 150 m.p.h. on the southwest coast of Florida just north of Captiva Island around 3:45 pm. An hour later, Charley's eye passed over Punta Gorda. The hurricane then crossed central Florida, passing near Kissimmee and Orlando. Charley was still of hurricane intensity around midnight when its center cleared the northeast coast of Florida near Daytona Beach. After moving into the Atlantic, Charley came ashore ag ... The largest undisturbed barrier island along the southern part of the North Carolina coast is Masonboro Island, located in New Hanover County between the barrier island towns of Wrightsville Beach and Carolina Beach. The city of Wilmington lies 5 miles to the northwest. The component is accessible only by boat. The Masonboro site is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the east, the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway to the west, Masonboro Inlet to the north and Carolina Beach Inlet to the south. The 8.4 mile long island encompasses approximately 5,046 acres, 87 percent of which are covered with marsh and tidal flats. The remaining 619 acres are composed of beach uplands and dredge material islands. The island is located in the most populous part of the North Carolina coastal area. ... [Read More]

Atlantic Beach, South Carolina, has been a haven for drug dealing and corruption for the past twenty years. This four by seven block beach town, situated between Myrtle and North Myrtle Beaches, has been the home of the Gores, a notorious crime and drug-dealing family. Through their Dominican supply networks in both New York and Florida, it is estimated that the Gores and their associates brought more than 2700 kilograms of cocaine into Atlantic Beach over the past 12 years. After cooking at least half of the cocaine into crack, the group would then resell out of Atlantic Beach. ... [Read More]

TPC ATLANTIC FLOYD 1999 PRELIMINARY REPORT
a. Synoptic History Floyd can be traced back to a tropical wave that emerged from western Africaon 2 September. This system was not particularly impressive-looking, interms of the organization of the convection shown on satellite images, butthere was evidence of curvature in the cloud lines. Overall the system wasbroad and disorganized, yet easily recognizable as a synoptic-scale entity. The wave proceeded westward across the eastern tropical Atlantic at aboutthe normal speed of propagation, 6 degrees of longitude per day, with littleapparent change, for several days. A center of circulation was estimatedlate on 5 September near 15N 32.5W but the cloud pattern lacked sufficientdeep convection for a Dvorak classification. On 6 September, there wasenough of a curved band of deep convection present so that the system wasclassified as a T1.0 on the Dvorak scale around 1200 UTC. A favorableupper-level outflow pattern existed over the area, and the cloud patternbecame more consolidated and ... [Read More]

TPC ATLANTIC IRENE 1999 PRELIMINARY REPORT
a. Synoptic History A broad area of low pressure prevailed over the southwestern Caribbean fromthe 8 th to the 10 th of October, accompanied bydisorganized clouds and thunderstorms. This system did not show signs oftropical cyclone development until a tropical wave reached the westernCaribbean Sea on 11 October. On the 12 th , a U.S. Air ForceReserve reconnaissance plane was dispatched to the region and found anincipient low-level circulation and a broad low pressure area of 1006 mbjust to the northeast of the coast of Honduras. However, the circulationwas too disorganized to be classified as a tropical depression. Satelliteimagery during the night showed that the thunderstorm activity increased andboth banding features and upper-level outflow became quite distinct. Post-analysis of surface and upper-air data from Grand Cayman, and satelliteDvorak T-numbers indicate that Tropical Depression Thirteen formed in thenorthwestern Caribbean Sea about 0600 UTC 13 October. It reached tropi ... [Read More]
