Several NOAA sites are now connected to Abilene, a project of the University Corporation for Advanced Internet Development (UCAID) developed to support the Internet2 project. Abilene is an advanced backbone network that connects regional network aggregation points, called GigaPoPs. It supports the work of Internet2 universities and research partners as they develop advanced Internet applications. The NOAA sites that are connected include: the Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory in Seattle Washington, the National Severe Storms Laboratory in Norman Oklahoma, the Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory in Miami Florida, and the Boulder and Silver Spring campuses.
