Field Offices New York City Welcome
Although it has been almost fifty years since Ellis Island closed its doors as an immigration processing center, New York is still one of the gateways to the United States. The John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFKIA) has replaced Ellis Island as a key place where most immigrants take their first steps in America, as jumbo jets have largely replaced the steamers and ocean liners that once brought individuals to our shores even as the basic functions of immigration processing and enforcement remain the same. ... Weiner (NY09) - Report - Report Prepared By: Representative Anthony D. - Stadium Sticker Shock
Better: Ever since the Jets left New York for New Jersey in 1983, civic planners have taken an interest in re-developing Willets Point, Queens. The U.S. National Tennis Center and Shea Stadium, the home of the New York Mets, sit in the middle of Queens, on land right near the site of the 1964 World’s Fair. Situated on the same subway line that would serve the proposed stadium on the West Side, at an intersection of nearly half-a-dozen major thoroughfares, Willets Point already contains the parking facilities to accommodate the increased traffic and congestion that would tie up mid-town each time a West Side Stadium hosted a major event. At a minimum, a Willets Point Stadium would not disrupt the significant revenue generated by the theater community on Broadway. This is the home of the Jets. ... [Read More]

New York City: History
At the turn of the century, New York was the preeminent American city; it represented the "new metropolis." The great waves of European immigrants coming to New York, the consolidation of the five boroughs into one vast city, the development of the city's infrastructure, and the incredible construction boom of the next thirty years all contributed to the city's prominence. In many of the New York films there is a sense of pride, or perhaps a celebration of the emergence of the great metropolis. The best of these films convey the sense that the already sprawling city was in the process of becoming something much more than a squalid, chaotic urban center; there are skyscrapers going up -- the tallest in the world; a great suspension bridge being opened -- the largest in the world; and a new subway system -- the longest in the world. We see a proud police force marching in front of a large crowd, orderly columns of street sweepers parading in clean white suits, and the most powerful fire ... [Read More]

Public Advocate for the City of New York – Speeches
The Jets can promise in the press to pick up rising construction costs and cost over-runs, but those promises are worthless without a commitment in black-and-white. The Memorandum of Understanding between the Jets and the City must include an assurance that New Yorkers will not be left on the hook for these major unaccounted-for expenses. ...

Four hundred million of the Jets’ $800 million contribution will be funded with the City’s city revenue bonds. These are tax exempt bonds that are supposed to be devoted to projects that further the public good, and there is a ceiling on how many the City can issue. Not only is the City forfeiting the tax revenue it would receive by issuing taxable bonds to the Jets, it is giving up a significant portion of its tax exempt bonds, which could otherwise fund critical public projects such as affordable housing and other economic development. ... THE DISCOVERY OF SPRITES, JETS AND ELVES:
In the summer of 1994, Wescott andassociates ( Wescott et al., 1994; Wescott et al., 1995a,b)confirmed the existence of jets and named the phenomena blue jetswhen they recorded a very active thunderstorm in Arkansas, USAusing both a low-light-level monochrome and a color video cameras. The video was collected during a nighttime research flight usingtwo aircraft that were flying around the thunderstorm. Duringthis flight, color video imagery established that jets are bluein color and sprites are red. A total of 52 jets were seen duringa 20-minute time span. The jets developed over several videoframes, with a characteristic time of the order of 100 ms andpropagation speeds similar to that of a step leader process (i.e.,~ 10 5 m/s). The video released after this flight provedto be a turning point in establishing wide interest in these phenomena. The spectacular multiple close-up images of these jets completelyovershadowed the single, poorly resolved jet observation fromthe space shu ... [Read More]
