CVO Menu - America's Volcanic Past - New Mexico
The Carrizozo Malpais are one of the youngest volcanic features in the state of NewMexico. The Malpais, are basaltic lava flows (75 kilometer-long), such as are being erupted today in Hawaii. State highway 380 traverses the Carrizozo Malpais, and this road provides good access to people who want to view, or visit the lava flows. The"Valley of Fires" Recreation Area is located on the Carrizozo Malpais. The Carrizozo Malpais are a lava flow thatformed by magma (molten rock)pouring outof a small crack in the earth's surface. TheCarrizozo Malpais were formed by an"Hawaiian-style" volcanic eruption. This typeof eruption is ongoing in Hawaii today. TheHawaiian-style eruption is very passive, and istypically characterized by magma pouringfrom a small vent in the earth's surface, andthen traveling either across the earth's surfaceor through a series of lava tubes until it coolsand solidifies. Geologists estimate that theentire Carrizozo eruption would have takenbetween 2 to 3 decades and that t ... [Read More]

Geology of Guadalupe Mountains National Park
El Capitan is composed of Capitan Limestone , which is the Permian-aged limestone reef deposit. A reef is a submerged resistant mound or ridge formed by the accumulation of plant and animal skeletons. The Capitan Limestone is a massive, fine-grained fossiliferous limestone that formed by growth and accumulation of invertebrate skeleton of algae, sponges, and tiny colonial animals called bryozoans . These skeletons were stabilized by encrusting organisms that grew over and cemented the solid reef rock, unlike modern reefs built by mainly a rigid framework of corals. ... [Read More]

NPS Paleontology Research Abstract Volume
Studies indicate that shelf deposition systems in the Yates and Tansill formations, specifically those on the outer-shelf proximal to the Capitan reef, were influenced to a great extent by sea level fluctuations through time. Platform carbonate facies deposited during sea level highstands are characterized by mosaics of shallow-marine sands, sponge-algal patch reefs, and low-lying islands. These deposits, as well as those of the adjoining Capitan reef, were pervasively cemented at these times by marine aragonite cements. In contrast, platforms were exposed subaerially during periods of sea level lowstand, at which time siliciclastic sediments (sands and silts) were deposited as thin but regionally extensive "sheets" across the platforms. Platform bypassing resulted in the deposition of some of the sands and silts into the adjoining Delaware Basin. Diagenetic processes operative during lowstands include lithification by meteoric calcite cements, and extensive karsting of exposed carbona ... [Read More]

Visible Earth: Southwestern United States
Skies were clear over the Southwestern United States and northern Mexico when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this image on May 31, 2004. From left to right, Utah, Colorado, and Kansas line the top of the image. In the center, also from left to right, are Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Oklahoma. Mexico forms the lower part of the image. A red dot in New Mexico marks the location of the Peppin Fire burning in the Capitan Mountains. The blackened, fire-scarred land is more visible in the high resolution image, which shows the scene at 250 meters per pixel. ... [Read More]
